Coaching teams is hard. Introducing change is hard. Both of these can also be exceptionally rewarding. Changing your own habits can be challenging enough, but changing the behaviour of a team or an organisation is a discipline in its own right. (This is especially true if the team doesn't actually want to change.)

In this workshop you will explore some of the principles and practices of coaching, and learn proven techniques that you can try out and use straight away with your teams. Practical exercises and role-playing will help cement the learning, and you will find yourself applying your new knowledge to the workshop itself as the day progresses.

The day is made up of four sessions, each focusing on a different theme. The morning sessions explore the fundamentals of learning and communication, and create a foundation for the afternoon's themes of change and coaching.

Session 1

" How learning works "

We start the day by looking at how people learn new information and why some teaching is more effective than others. Much of your life is spent in learning situations - at school, at home, at work - but yet very few people are taught how to learn. This session introduces some well-established models of learning that we will put to immediate use during the rest of the day. We also look at how to deliver and receive effective feedback, which will help you to get the most out of your learning.

Session 2

" How communication works "

Face-to-face communication is the best way we have of transferring knowledge, and creating rapport is key to making it successful. This session looks at what rapport means, and demonstrates some techniques for creating good rapport, either for one-to-one or group interactions. We build on this by looking at how to monitor your conversation while you are having them so you can communicate more effectively.

Session 3

" How change works "

The purpose of most coaching is to effect change, or rather to help someone effect change for themselves. In this session we examine the nature of change, and how it affects people and groups, and in particular how the mind filters information. We also look at a powerful model of the way a person processes information and events, which gives a deeper insight into how they react to change, and what you can do to help to make it safe for them.

Session 4

" How coaching works "

Effective coaching is about building and maintaining trusting relationships. There is a wide spectrum of people who call themselves coaches, from people who simply enjoy "helping out" to qualified life coaches providing specific one-on-one coaching. This final session describes some of the practices behind more formal coaching, whether it is for business, personal growth or some other purpose. We finish with a summary of the day's learnings and an outline of next steps.
